Slap Daddy's

by Malynda Fulton

Specializing in juicy burgers and hot dogs, Slap Daddy’s opened its doors at 914 Baytree Road on Oct.19.

Although Slap Daddy’s is not a chain yet, it is the lifelong dream of Bob Braybrooks and his wife, Elizabeth. As a restaurant-equipment salesman for years, Bob always wanted to run his own establishment, and with the help of partner Pat O’Neal, the Braybrooks are now spending all their time at the place they created on the corner of Baytree and Jerry Jones roads.

In just a few short weeks, Slap Daddy’s has made a name for itself in town with homemade fries cooked in peanut oil, light and airy onion rings, hot dogs and the popular fresh, thick hamburger, just about any way a customer wants them.

“We already have a reputation for making a really good burger,” Braybrooks said. “We call it the best burger on the planet around here.”

With affordable prices and unbeatable deals, the restaurant keeps a pretty sturdy customer base.

“The food is very inexpensive actually,” Braybrooks said. “You can come in and get a filling meal for under $5. Every afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. we also have a free drink special when a customer orders a burger and fries or a dog and fries. If you keep the price down, and give customers good food, you’ll attract customers. And if they come in once, they’ll come back.”

According to Braybrooks, the restaurant is filled most days with business men and women, while families and the younger crowd fill it up most nights. It’s easy to spot Slap Daddy’s as there is frequently a young man or woman standing outside in a hot-dog costume waving at customers. Braybrooks said there will soon be a hamburger costume joining the hot dog.

The emphasis, according to Braybrooks, is on “fresh,” with the food made fresh and served hot to each customer rather than kept in warmers. “We don’t keep anything frozen around here,” he said.

Already serving more than 400 hamburgers and 200 hot dogs each day, Slap Daddy’s apparently does keep customers coming back for “the best burger on the planet.”
